Suppression of Airborne Viral Epidemic Spread by Ultraviolet light barrierS - Soppressione della carica virale aerea con barriere ad ultravioletti

It’s a project for the containment of airborne transmission of viral infection based on the use of UVC radiation (100-280 nm) as an effective antimicrobial agent, also assessing its effectiveness in relation to environmental parameters such as temperature and relative humidity.

Although UV systems for sterilising rooms have been on the market for many years, they all require the absence of people or, at best, the radiation of air volumes away from people.

This project proposes an innovative system capable of creating UV light barriers in a vertical air flow between people in static situations (buses, planes, waiting rooms, etc.), guaranteeing adequate safety.

At present, the prevention of the spread of the virus relies essentially on measures of social distancing and the use of personal protective equipment. In the early stages of the pandemic by Sars-CoV-2, the lack of awareness of the need for such measures led to critical situations in various scenarios, such as in public transport and in the waiting rooms of hospital facilities, facilitating the spread of the epidemic.

The adoption of such measures is particularly difficult in confined environments and especially in public transport systems, which have to operate at a fraction of maximum capacity with obvious loss of efficiency and an increase in per capita costs. The barriers proposed in this project will make it possible to reduce the microbial load in enclosed spaces, where it is possible to clearly identify the area occupied by the person e.g. bus seats and aeroplanes, or where spaces such as waiting rooms and special situations can be designed ad hoc. work situations.
